Sun Media Reaches 2.6 Million People
Each Weekday in Canada's Top Urban Markets!

Toronto, March 17, 2010 - The 2009 NADbank Survey, the industry study that measures the readership of all key daily newspapers across Canada for 2009, confirms that SUN Media's Urban dailies have remained stable. Overall weekday readership is stable year over year, while our weekly readership is up by 4.2%.

24 Hours

24 Hours experienced an overall growth of over 10% over 2008 - a testament that our redesign and our new editorial approach are meeting readers' needs.
Market highlights for 24 hours are:

  • 24 hours Vancouver is still the #1 free daily in Vancouver. Readership grew by 8% over 2008 NADbank results.
  • 24 hours Edmonton was included for the first time in the full 2009 NADbank study. They are boasting 104,300 weekly readers 46% of which are exclusive of Metro.
  • 24 hours Calgary has experienced a 53% increase over its 2008 NADbank results! As this is only the second year for it to be measured we are expecting great things from this publication in the future.
  • 24 hours Toronto has experienced a slight slip in numbers in 2009, we are committed to continuing improvements in 24 hours Toronto and expect that, with each change we make, we will earn our readers one at a time.
  • 24 hour Ottawa is on the right track and has had an increase in weekday readership of 35%!
  • Our distribution strategies in Montreal are paying off as 24 heures has gained 18% more weekday readers in the Montreal CMA.

Paid Dailies

Our paid dailies established some new heights in some key markets like Montreal, Quebec City, Edmonton and Ottawa. Paid dailies had a 7-day cumulative increase of 0.5%
Market highlights:

  • The Edmonton SUN's weekday readers are up 7% over 2008 NADbank.
  • Calgary SUN's weekday readers are down overall, but we have noted significant increases in following demographic groups: HHI $100K+, Adult only hh's, and managers and professionals.
  • Winnipeg SUN's weekday readers are down overall, but we have noted increases in following demographic groups: adults 18-24, and HHI $100K+
  • The Toronto SUN has experienced losses in overall readership in 2009, Mike Power is committed to making changes to the circulation strategy of the Toronto SUN in order to rectify the situation.
  • The Ottawa SUN's weekday readers are up 8% over 2008 NADbank.
  • Le Journal de Montréal's weekday readers are up 6% over 2008 NADbank.
  • Le Journal de Québec's weekday readers are up 10% over 2008 NADbank.
